The development of Hospitality industry in Asia-Pacific region

The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region has emerged as a key hub for global hospitality, fueled by economic growth, diverse attractions, and an expanding middle class. The sector’s evolution includes increased investments and innovative services for tech-savvy travelers. Sustainability is at the forefront, with hotels embracing eco-friendly initiatives, reflecting the global move toward greener, more responsible tourism.
A Strong Recovery Trajectory
According to A Comprehensive Analysis of the APAC Hospitality Sector 2023 by Medium, the APAC region's hospitality industry is projected to reach the market size of 400 billion USD by 2025, representing a robust recovery from the pandemic's impacts. Key markets such as Singapore, Japan & Korea, witnessed remarkable hotel & occupancy performance metrics in 2023, with Average Daily Rates (ADRs) soaring nearly 20% above pre-pandemic levels. (2023 Asia Pacific Hotels and Hospitality Report by CBRE Research, October 2023). This resurgence is driven by a surge in domestic tourism, which has been the backbone of the industry during recovery.
Countries like Thailand have also reported rebounds in tourism and hospitality. Thailand, which welcomed over 39 million tourists annually before the pandemic, is targeting nearly 36 million foreign visitors by the end of 2024, significantly recovering hotel occupancy rates and service demand. (Thailand on Track To Hit 35.6M Target Foreign Visitors for 2024 by Globe.Co).

Investment in Infrastructure and Luxury Resorts
In response to the increasing demand for high-quality accommodations, global hotel chains are expanding their presence across APAC. Accor, one of the leading players in the region, has rapidly increased its portfolio, focusing on both luxury brands and more affordable options. Similarly, Hilton and Marriott have ramped up investments in major cities and resort destinations, enhancing their offerings to include everything from wellness retreats to high-tech business hotels.

Technology as a Game-Changer in Hospitality
The hospitality industry in APAC is leading the way in digital transformation. According to a report by McKinsey & Company in 2021, over 60% of travelers in the region relied on digital platforms for bookings. Nearly three-quarters (72%) of APAC travellers say they will use technology to make responsible travel choices, emphasising informed and authentic experiences that positively impact destinations (Travel Weekly Asia in 2024). Also, Indonesia, Thailand, China, & Singapore are now impressive with the highest percentage of travellers across the globe open to using AI at times during the planning, booking and experiencing of their 2025 stay (SiteMinder’s Changing Traveller Report 2025). These are why hotels are increasingly adopting cutting-edge technology to improve customer experience. Contactless check-ins, keyless room entry, and AI-driven customer service have become the norm in many hotels.
Japan has been a pioneer in introducing high-tech hospitality, with robot-staffed hotels and AI-powered guest services, originating from the prominent Japanese hotel chain - Henn-na Hotel. Major hotel chains in the region such as Hoshino Resorts and Okura Nikko Hotels have also begun integrating smart room technologies, where guests can control everything from lighting to room temperature via mobile apps or voice commands.
Meanwhile, personalized services, such as AI-based recommendations and real-time language translation, are creating tailored experiences for guests (The Revolutionary AI Strategy for Hotels Based on the Blue Ocean Strategy by HospitalityNet).

Sustainability: The New Standard
A key challenge facing the hospitality industry in APAC is ensuring sustainable growth. The rise of eco-friendly hotels and resorts is no longer just a trend but a necessity. Many hotels and restaurants are focusing on reducing their environmental footprint by using energy-efficient systems, reducing waste, and offering locally sourced food.
A notable example is the Grand Hyatt Singapore, which has implemented various sustainable practices, including water conservation methods like low-flow fixtures and rainwater harvesting. These initiatives have significantly reduced operational water usage.
Another outstanding example is Song Saa Private Island in Cambodia, known for integrating sustainable materials in its design and supporting a marine reserve.
Pizza 4P’s is also an excellent example of a restaurant chain integrating sustainability and locally sourced ingredients into its operations. Their “farm-to-table” concept emphasizes using fresh, chemical-free products directly sourced from local partners.

Future Outlook
The future of the hospitality industry in the Asia-Pacific region is bright. According to the WTTC's 2023 Economic Impact research, the sector is expected to grow substantially over the next decade, driven by rising middle-class incomes, increased travel demand, and continuous investment in infrastructure and technology.
As APAC continues to navigate the post-pandemic landscape, the hospitality industry is set to remain a vital component of economic growth. With a focus on innovation, technology and sustainability, the region is poised to redefine global hospitality standards and enhance its reputation as a premier travel destination.
