The Vertical Village: Rethinking High-rise Living in Asian Cities

Across Asia, the high-rise has become the defining response to rapid urbanisation, rising land prices and population growth. From Bangkok and Tokyo to Beijing, Singapore, and Ho Chi Minh City, cities are growing upward at remarkable speed. However, as density increases, a more fundamental question is emerging: “Can high-rise living offer more than efficiency?”

 

The idea of the “vertical village” proposes a new answer. Rather than treating towers as stacks of private apartments, architects are beginning to imagine them as three-dimensional neighborhoods where streets become skywalks, gardens move into the upper levels, and community facilities are distributed throughout the building. 

 

Asia is becoming an important laboratory for this shift.

 

Bringing the Neighborhood Into the Tower

Traditional residential towers often concentrate communal life at ground level, leaving upper floors largely disconnected from one another. The vertical village challenges this model by turning circulation and shared spaces into places for interaction.

 

A pioneering example is Linked Hybrid in Beijing, designed by Steven Holl Architects. Its eight residential towers are connected by elevated bridges containing shared facilities such as a swimming pool, fitness centre, café, gallery, and auditorium. At ground level, restaurants, a hotel, kindergarten, and public spaces further diversify the complex. 

 

The bridges are more than connections between buildings. They function like streets in the sky, creating opportunities for residents to encounter one another and transforming circulation into social infrastructure.

Designing for Climate and Community

In tropical Asia, the vertical village also offers an opportunity to rethink how high-rise architecture responds to climate.

 

Bangkok's The Met, designed by WOHA, replaces the sealed glass tower with a more porous residential environment. Six staggered blocks are connected by open-air sky terraces, while apartments feature balconies and cross-ventilation. The arrangement allows light and air to penetrate deep into the complex while providing residents with shared outdoor spaces. 

 

The design demonstrates that density does not necessarily mean sacrificing outdoor life. A balcony can become an extension of the home; a sky terrace can function as both social space and climate buffer; and an open corridor can replace the enclosed hallway.

 

For increasingly dense tropical cities, porosity itself can become infrastructure.

Turning the Building Into Landscape

Another approach is to translate the qualities of low-rise neighborhoods - gardens, terraces and pedestrian connections - into the vertical section.

 

In Qinhuangdao, China, Habitat Qinhuangdao, designed by Safdie Architects, arranges residential blocks around a network of elevated gardens and bridges. Many homes have private terraces or balconies, while communal gardens are distributed across different levels. The stepped composition creates a sense of vertical topography, allowing residents to experience landscape and outdoor space even within a high-density development. 

 

Instead of placing towers on a landscape, the project effectively turns the architecture itself into landscape. This approach is increasingly relevant as Asian cities seek ways to accommodate growth without eliminating access to nature.

When the Tower Becomes a City

Japan offers a different interpretation: extending the vertical-village idea beyond individual buildings into entire districts.

 

Tokyo's Azabudai Hills, opened in 2023, combines residences, offices, retail, education, healthcare, cultural facilities and extensive public greenery. Its planning follows Mori Building's “Vertical Garden City” concept, concentrating development upward while freeing significant ground-level space for landscape and public activity. 

 

Here, the vertical village is no longer simply a residential strategy. It becomes a model for mixed-use urban development, where living, working, leisure and public life coexist within a walkable environment.

 

Yet it also raises an important question: “Who gets to participate in the village?” A beautifully designed vertical district can still become socially exclusive if housing and amenities are accessible only to affluent residents. Density alone does not create community; diversity and accessibility matter just as much.

Greenery as Urban Infrastructure

Across Asia, vegetation is also moving from decorative feature to functional infrastructure.

 

In Nanjing, Stefano Boeri Architetti's Easyhome Huanggang Vertical Forest City Complex integrates approximately 1,100 trees and 2,500 cascading plants and shrubs into two residential towers. The project is intended to support biodiversity and improve the environmental performance of the urban environment.

In Colombo, Clearpoint Residencies similarly incorporates extensive planted terraces into a high-rise residential model, demonstrating how landscape can become part of the domestic environment rather than being confined to the ground plane.

The more important shift is conceptual: greenery is no longer simply something that makes a tower look sustainable. Properly integrated, it can provide shade, cooling, biodiversity and opportunities for outdoor interaction.

 

A More Asian Model of Density

The vertical village is not a single architectural style. Its forms vary according to climate, culture and urban conditions - from Beijing's connected skybridges to Bangkok's porous terraces, China's elevated gardens and Tokyo's mixed-use urban districts.

 

What unites these experiments is a change in perspective. Density is no longer simply a question of how many people can fit onto a site. It is a question of how much quality of urban life can be retained within that density.

 

The future Asian high-rise could therefore become more than a stack of apartments. It could contain streets, gardens, schools, markets, workplaces, social spaces, and ecological systems - effectively becoming a city compressed into three dimensions.

 

As Asian cities continue to grow upward, the most important question may not be “How high can we build?” but “How can we make vertical living feel more like living in a neighborhood?
