Designer/ Architect: Akira Sogo + Mami Sogo / SOGO AUD

Nestled at the base of Mount Asama in Japan’s Komoro City, the Komoro Distillery redefines the relationship between architecture, sustainability, and experience. More than just a whisky production facility, this project pioneers a symbiotic connection between nature, craftsmanship, and the community.
The design reflects a deep respect for material authenticity - steel, concrete, and timber are celebrated in their raw form, creating an elegant architectural honesty. Visitors are welcomed under soaring larch-clad eaves, while the undulating layout subtly mirrors the surrounding terrain. Under one unified roof, production and guest engagement coexist seamlessly, offering a rare harmony between function and hospitality.
What sets Komoro Distillery apart is its deep commitment to sustainability - partnering with local farmers to upcycle by-products into feed and fertilizer, while also serving as a hub for education and global dialogue through its Whisky Academy and role as Asia’s first host of the World Whisky Forum.
With its thoughtful spatial choreography, sustainable ethos, and immersive user experience, Komoro Distillery sets a new standard in F&B architecture. It is a shining example of how design can amplify both regional identity and global relevance.
